September 2009 - Here we go again!!! As the sailing season winds down up North, the season starts here in The Villages. The Villages Sailing Club will begin our 5th season at LakeMionaRecCenter this coming Wednesday at 10:00A.M. and on each following 2nd Wednesday of each month through May. The club has featured many activities over the past 4 years. We have sailed on Lakes Miona, Harris, Wier, and Sumter, and have charted cruises on both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. For the last 3 years, we have participated in Outdoor Expo with an information table and a boat on LakeMiramar. Other events have included picnics, sailing to Gator Joe's on LakeWier, participating in the St. Patrick's Day parade, and--for the first time--entering decorated sailboats with masts up in the Villages Christmas parade at the Polo Grounds. It was fun at the Christmas parade to see the enthusiastic response from the crowd, particularly from the children who were excited to see Santa at the helm of the lead boat. This year, we will again undertake these activities. Now, it's time to invite members to become officers for the club. In order to grow, rotation of officers is necessary. This will bring new ideas and energy to the organization. Therefore, we will have elections at the November meeting for officers. It has been brought to my attention that some members have not been able to crew on members' boats during our sailing events. This has been an ongoing problem because of the small number of sailboats belonging to members of the club. If more members could bring more boats to The Villages to participate in club events and share them with the membership, the problem would be solved. I have been asked several times if we could have races or regattas on LakeSumter. At this point, we cannot do this because we lack enough boats belonging to club members. Any member wishing to purchase a boat can consult with the Commodore about finding the right boat. The ideal size for a boat would be around 16 feet, a size that can easily be stored in a garage or at a local storage facility. I'm looking forward to seeing all of you at the meetings at LakeMionaRecCenter. Fair winds and smooth sailing! Rich Mosher, Commodore
